You can read about the events and timings of a battle forever, but the final key to understanding has to be an appreciation of the lie of the land. This is not always possible because often some of the features have been levelled, blighted, or developed over. But mostly it is still incredibly useful - and incredibly moving - to stand on the actual spot the combatants did, and to see with their eyes.
