This is the wall around the church itself, the scene of the bitterest and bloodiest fighting on 14th October 1758. Field Marshal Keith, that great Scottish general who was Frederick's right hand man and close friend, had warned the King about the position of his right flank, but been ignored. Frederick believed Daun to be too cautious to take the initiative - a view supported by phoney intelligence he had received from a double agent. Keith made his last stand at Hochkirch. He was shot dead trying to rally the troops here. Then a cannon ball took of the head of the King's brother-in-law, Frederick Francis of Brunswick.
