Napoleon immediately ordered his artillery to be brought up on top of the Langrafenberg feature (281m) immediately to the north of Jena. and personally oversaw his engineers as they constructed a road to facilitate this. This track is still in use today at the end of the road called 'Am Steiger', reached by turning off the main 'Erfurter Strasse'. Here looking downhill, the steep gradient can be appreciated.
