Seven Years War : Rossbach

This is the area to the north-east of Reichardtswerben where the first and crucial encounter took place. Major General von Seydlitz, given command of Frederick's entire cavalry, had marched around the back of the ridge and wheeled around, ready for the arrival of the enemy cavalry, marching 2,000 paces ahead of the enemy infantry. This position is somewhere near where the French commander de Broglie would have stood as he witnessed, in horror, Seydlitz's horses charge down upon him. The allies committed ever increasing numbers of horses to the fray - first 24 more squadrons, then 16 more under the Prince de Soubise himself. But Seydlitz still had 18 squadrons in reserve, and the commital of these finally routed the enemy force. Unfortunately a gravel pit has destroyed the ground to the left of this picture.
