Mr Pippel, 78, spearheaded a campaign in 2001 to remember Rossbach afresh. And so the second monument - erected after the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 to replace that removed to Paris by Napoleon, only to be churned into a Soviet gravel pit - has been restored. Similarly the third monument, which suffered the same fate, has been copied anew, if to a slightly smaller scale, beside it.
